Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand and is located in the North Island. Auckland was first settled by the Maori people in approximately 1350 and was then known as Tamaki Makau Rau which means "isthmus of one thousand lovers". It wasn't until the 20 Mar 1840 that the Treaty of Waitangi was signed and Auckland was named the capital city of New Zealand, by 1865 the capital was moved to Wellington and by 1900 Auckland was New Zealand's largest city. It was only after this treaty was signed that the Europeans started to settle on the land.
