The Hamilton Airport is located approximately 15 minutes drive from the heart of Hamilton in the central North Island, the local regoin is known as the Waikato. Before 1935 the airport started out as a "flying paddock", later serving as a maintenance base for aircraft during World War II. It didn't start it's scheduled domestic passenger flights until the early 1950's and the crown operated it until it's sold to local council authorities. Hamilton airport has grown rapidly since then with the introduction of international operations in 1996 and extensions to the terminal building and runway to cater for increased services.
