Napier is the capital of the Hawke's Bay province and it was first sighted by Europeans in October 1769, the Endeavour was sailing down the east coast of the North Island. It was whalers, missionaries and traders first to settle in the region and not until the 1850's did farmers and hotel keepers arrive. Napier was named after Sir Charles Napier, the hero of the Battle of Meeanee in 1854.
