Palmerston North is located approximately 2 hours north of the Capital city Wellington, the region had an interesting start as the local Maroi tribe sold the 250,000 acres on 23 July 1864 to the Government as a means of opening up the Manawatu for settlement. The town site was chosen due to the flat and open clearing in the southern block and it wasn't until 3 October 1866 that the township officially came into existence and was given the name Palmerston, after a British statesman, the 3rd Viscount Palmerston.

Palmerston North is a pleasant place to visit and to break a journey to or from Wellington, this is a lovely place offering a friendly, young, relaxed atmosphere of a rural university town.
