Timaru is located on the east coast 2.5 hours south of Christchurch on the South Island, named Te Maru, "place of shelter", Timaru was originally a haven for weary Maori travellers canoeing along the otherwise shelterless coastline. Timaru was briefly settled as a whaling station about 1838 and the first resident was whaler Samuel Williams. The region was sparsely populated until 1859, it was then that the ship "Strathallan" arrived from England with 120 immigrants aboard and from that point the town grew with whalers and traveller moving along the coast.

Today Timaru is a hive of activity due its perfect location for holiday makers, from the five central South Island ski fields within easy drive to the many inland lakes at it's doorstep. Whether it's dropping a line from the wharf at Timaru in the hope of hooking a fish, sailing offshore on the sparkling Pacific Ocean, or tramping in nature's bush-clad hills, there's something to interest the whole family.
