For Car Hire in Wanganui and the surrounding area, we can help you here at Find Me a Rental Car.
Wanganui also spelt Whanganui is located on the west coast of the North Island and is only 200km north of New Zealands capital city Wellington. The city of Wanganui sits at the mouth of the great Whanganui River which runs for hundreds of km into the heart of the King Country. This area at the mouth of the Whanganui River was a major site of pre-European Maori settlement and it wasn't until 1831 that the first European traders arrived, followed in 1840 by missionaries Octavius Hadfield and Henry Williams who collected signatures for the Treaty of Waitangi. The orginal settlement was called Petre after Lord Petre but was officially renamed Wanganui/ Whanganui on 20 January 1854, meaning big bay or big harbour.
Today this beautiful city has a little bit of everything to offer, from some of the oldest buildings to the proud history and water sports for the more adventurous, you can find the pace that suites your needs for the day. Wanganui is one of the oldest rugby unions in New Zealand but has never held the Ranfurly Shield, however the history of the Football Union and their grounds is very interesting. Also from this love of the game Wanganui environs have produced a lot of All Blacks and one or two that played for the Wallabies over the years. Whanganui also has two sister cities (as designated by Sister Cities International) the first being Toowoomba in Queensland, Australia (since 1983) and Nagaizumi-cho in Japan (since 1988). This melding pot of wounderful history and uncompromising standards along with the friendly and welcoming locals makes Wanganui a must stop to enjoy and recharge.
