Wellington is located at the bottom fo the North Island of New Zealand and is the capital for the nation. The earliest name for Wellington, from Maori legend, is 'Te Upoko o te Ika a Maui', or 'the head of Maui's fish'. Caught and pulled to the surface by the Polynesian navigator Maui, the fish became the North Island. It wasn't until 1839 when the first European settlers arrived by ship that they founded the planned town of Wellington, it wasn't until 1865 that this windy city was names the capital of New Zealand.

Wellington is New Zealand's centre of government and the world's southernmost capital city, it is also a leading centre for creative industries, such as film and computer technology, and it is the home of the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX).
