Whakatane is located on the northern east coast of the North Island approximately 1 gours drive from Rotorua. The first inhabitant was more than a 1,000 years ago and it was Tiwakawaka, a grandson of Maui who discovered Aotearoa (New Zealand). Life was complete for the Maori tribe, then not until the 1830's did the Europeans begin to settle in the region and whalers sealers and later missionaries and traders made their homes here. The area became a major shipbuilding centre and the vessels were used to carry maize, potatoes, wheat and flax to other northern population centres for sale or barter. After the New Zealand land wars during the 1860s and 70s a unit of armed constabulary were stationed there, with the advent of more peaceful times industrial and agricultural developed over the years and remains an economic mainstay.

Today Whakatane is a tourist hot spot in New Zealand with it's sandy beaches that are predominant along the 54 kilometres of coastline. This perfect location is the gateway to the East Cape, and the Whakatane and Motu Rivers where you can explore by jet boat or raft.
