Whangarei is located on the east coast at the top of the North Island approximately 2 hours north of Auckland. The city's full name is 'Whangarei Terenga Paraoa' which can be literally translated as the 'swimming place of the whales'. William Carruth was the first European settler in the district, arriving in 1839. He was followed by Gilbert Mair three years later, who began the shipbuilding industry. Then by 1845 there were 12 pakeha (European) families living in the district with the first doctor (T B Kenderdine) who took up residence in the 1850s, however it was 40 years later in 1894 that the hospital was first built on the recommendation of Dr Hall. The current hospital stands on the site originally used in 1898. It was in the early 1900s saw much of the economic development that cemented Whangarei as the commercial heart of Northland.

Today Whangarei is a tourist hot spot with it being the most northern city in New Zealand it enjoys more than 2,000 hours of sunshine a year making it a favourite with national and international visitors. There is a little something here to do for everyone in the family from the "Museum and the Kiwi House" to the "Famous Poor Knights Island", you will find something here for the entire family to enjoy.
